Confounding expectations

I’ve recently enjoyed trying my hand at the new US Courthouse by Richard Meier in downtown San Diego. If I’d been presented with a site plan I would have scheduled this first image in the morning which is, in fact, when it was taken.

However, I first began scouting in the afternoon and the second image is what I encountered then. Overall the light is less crisp but the brightness of the lobby draws the eye to the entry which is the focal point of the approach. Even though this second image was shot first I went back to shoot the first one in the morning thinking the light would be better. Obviously, I was wrong. The original shot wins out.
